I found this clip that shows the chopper drive-by from where the crew and I were standing. The driver was worried that he might literally run over the camera, not just drive over it.
There's a half-joke on video shoots that you can always replace a camera man, but cameras are expensive. Professional-grade HD cameras can cost well over $10,000, so you can see why video crews get protective. One camera man I work with wouldn't even take me up on my offer to hold his camera while he maneuvered the boom lift. It wasn't that he didn't trust me, exactly… he just wanted to be the one who hurt it if anyone did.
In this case, fortunately, no harm was done. Just plenty of dust.
